Logeye Stereo: Increasing Efficiency at Steurer-Holz
Innovation in Wood Processing in Vorarlberg
Steurer-Holz in Vorarlberg exclusively performs contract sawing and processes annually between 60,000 and 65,000 cubic meters of wood, approximately 41,000 of that processed on the bandsaw. After modernizing the bandsaw with a new carriage and controls in 2017, they became aware of the Logeye Stereo solution from MiCROTEC and decided to integrate the system in 2022.
Increase in Productivity and Yield
Since the installation of the Logeye Stereo, Steurer-Holz has recorded a remarkable volume increase of 5% and an improvement in yield by 1 to 1.5%. The cutting capacity increased to 2,100 to 2,200 cuts per day, whereas before they managed 1,800. They even set a new record of 300 cubic meters in one day for the first time.
"Overall, the numbers we’ve had on paper since last year show that we have increased the volume by about 5%," says Claudio Bereiter, CEO and CTO of Steurer-Holz. The Logeye Stereo, a transverse stereoscopic scanner for logs, provides a complete 360-degree scan of a log, as it’s rolling into the carriage. Since the scan process takes place as it's transferred into the position, the log is already fully optimized and ready for sawing the instant it is dogged or sent through the sawline.
Optimized Processes through Advanced Technology
Given the challenge of finding personnel, the simple training of new employees on the Logeye Stereo solution is a significant advantage. "The automatic optimization and alignment of the log makes cutting easier because you no longer have to invest so much time and energy getting the log correctly aligned," explains Helmuth Simeoni, band saw operator at Steurer-Holz.
"For us, the time savings are simply a huge advantage, and the improved yield is better for our customers," adds Bereiter, "the system has paid for itself in a short time, and there was not other system for us like the Logeye Stereo."
